| State-owned BSNL is set to invite bids from private operators to share its third generation airwaves.The telco is of the view that it can raise between Rs 2,500 crore to Rs 5,000 core over five years if it were to enter into roaming arrangements with two players for its third generation airwaves. "Having tracked MTNL's success in attracting bids (for sharing its 3G airwaves by entering into roaming agreements, we are working to put in place a similar model," BSNL's acting chairman and managing director Gopal Das told ET. | The country's mobile handsets market recorded a growth of 3.6% to touch 40.08 million units in the third quarter ended September 30, 2010, as compared to the second quarter ended June 30, 2010, according to IDC India. The year 2010 is expected to end with total mobile handset sales of 155.9 million units. The sales in smartphones category saw a growth of 34.2% quarter on quarter and increase by 294.9% year-on-year and is likely to touch nearly 6 million in calendar 2010. Source | |

| Nokia and Samsung were the top picks for Indian consumers when it came to mobile phones in January-November, 2010, with the two handset-makers cornering almost 70 per cent of the market during the period in terms of total sales revenue. Data released by global market research firm GfK Nielsen shows that Finland-based Nokia retained the top slot in Indian mobile phone buyers' minds in the January-November, 2010, period, with a market share of 49.2 per cent in terms of revenue. Korean electronics giant Samsung had a 20.5 per cent share, as per the GfK Nielsen data. Source | |

| HCL Infosystems, the biggest Indian IT hardware brand and distributor, has announced its entry into West Asia and African telecom market through an acquisition of undisclosed size. HCL Info, which has found margins narrowing on many of its traditional revenue areas such as distribution of Nokia phones in India and selling of HCL brand PCs, has agreed to acquire 20% of the subsidiary of Dubai-based Techmart — one of the biggest distributors of Nokia globally. Techmart has a non-exclusive distribution licence from Nokia for West Asia and Africa. Source | |
| Etisalat, Airtel launch fibre optic cable from India to Europe | Top |
| UAE-based telecom major, Etisalat, has launched a high capacity fibre optic submarine cable that stretches from India to Europe, in collaboration with eight other global telecom players, including Bharti Airtel and Tata Communications. The 13,000-km three pair fiber optic cable named IMEWE (India-Middle East-Western Europe), has a design capacity of 3.84 terabits per second, connecting India to Italy and France via Middle East, with landings enroute in Pakistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia , Egypt and Lebanon, Etisalat said in a statement. | Orissa has registered the highest growth of 4.1 per cent among the Category-C telecom circles in the country in November 2010 in terms of new subscriber additions. The growth is also higher than the pan-India average of 3.37 per cent for the said period. The state's GSM subscriber base moved up from 15.34 million in October to 15.96 million by November-end. The growth in subscriber additions has come on the back of enhanced competition due to arrival of new players in the circle, falling tariff and also low penetration of mobile services, especially in the state's hinterland that has offered huge scope for growth. | India will come out with a new telecommunications policy tailored to meet the challenges wrought by rapid technological advances and to usher in more transparency in a sector recently hit by a spate of controversies. "We will, in the next 100 days, have a clear and transparent regime in place to cover these (telecom sector) issues," federal communications minister Kapil Sibal told reporters Saturday, outlining his agenda for the sector starting Jan. 1.
