TRAI to announce new telecom infrastructure policy next week news Top
The chairman of telecom regulator Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), J S Sarma, today said the regulatory body would announce its recommendations on the proposed new telecom infrastructure policies to encourage telecom equipment manufacturing in India next week. TRAI had floated a consultation paper on the telecom infrastructure policy in January 2011 which was closed with the final comments of stakeholders on 21 February Source
 
Do telecom companies stall number portability? Top
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will soon crack the whip on operators for the implementation of mobile number portability (MNP), even as a DNA survey found that the systems put up by some operators are far from fully functional. According to a nine-city survey, out of the major cellular operators of the country, only Vodafone could claim a 100% smooth operation of the first step. Source

The telecom industry is receiving incentives and subsidies as part of the efforts to reduce the carbon footprint, but it is not doing enough in the major areas . The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) last month published a consultation paper on "Green Telecommunications" addressing various aspects like carbon footprints for the telecommunications industry. Consumers prefer GSM players to CDMA providers: COAI Top
GSM services are preferred to CDMA players post number portability era, telecom lobby COAI claimed. "In the recent data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai), it is evident that the GSM players are the preferred option selected by the cellular subscribers to CDMA," GSM industry association COAI said in a statement. A GSM mobile has a SIM card, which provides more functionality and is convenient. A CDMA phone does not have a SIM card, and therefore you have to stick to the phone you have been provided with. India adds 14.7 million GSM subscribers in February Top
India's GSM subscriber base grew by 2.72 percent in February with the addition of 14.7 million mobile phone users, of which Vodafone Essar alone signed up over 3.56 million. The total number of GSM subscribers in the country crossed 555 million as against 540.37 million in January, according to the data released by Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI). Vodafone now has a market share of 23.59 percent, with 130.9 million subscribers. Telecom giant Bharti Airtel followed up with an addition of 3.2 million subscribers taking its total users to 159 million. Idea Cellular added 2.51 million subscribers to take its total subscribers base to 86.8 million. While state-owned BSNL added 1.5 million subscribers to reach a total subscribers base of 85 million.
 
Vodafone Leads on Number Portability Top
The India unit of the U.K.'s Vodafone Group PLC has so far gained the maximum number of subscribers on a net basis, since the launch of mobile number portability on Jan. 20, the telecom operator's association said Friday. Vodafone Essar Ltd. gained 192,761 users, while Idea Cellular Ltd. and sector leader Bharti Airtel Ltd. added 150,789 and 148,215 subscribers, respectively, Cellular Operators Association of India said in a statement. New telemarketing guidelines to come soon: TRAI Top
Telecom industry watchdog, TRAI, said it will "soon" announce a new date for implementation of new telemarketing guidelines which will end the trauma of pesky calls for unsuspecting phone-users. "I understand that DoT (Department of Telecom) should be able to take a decision in about 15-days. We (TRAI) should be able to announce a date soon…I don't think it will take long," Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman J S Sarma told reporters here. Source
 
Telecom investments pegged at Rs 5 lakh crore in 2012-2017 Top
With mobile subscribers growing at the pace of over 15 million every month, the telecom sector is likely to witness huge investments to the tune of Rs 5 lakh crore in the next five years plans (2012-2017). Of this, the two telecom PSUs — BSNL and MTNL are expected to make investments to the tune of Rs one lakh crore during the five years to ramp up their telecom infrastructure. Private players, on the other hand, are expected to invest Rs 4 lakh crore during the same period (2012-2017) in expanding their infrastructure. Source

The Indian animation industry is expected to grow at 20 percent to reach US$ 253 million by 2013 from the current US$ 122 million. Traditional print media in India is still has influence and aspires to reserve the second spot after TV. The horizontal expansion of the newspapers will continue to grow in 2011 by way of additional supplements to the dailies in the form of pull-outs on finance, health, real estate, entertainment, etc.
 
Termination notices for 85 new licences issued: DoT to PAC Top
The telecom ministry has informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that it has issued show cause notices to 13 companies for termination of their licences, who are stated to be "ineligible" for getting them. Based on the report of the CAG, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has "issued show cause notices to 13 companies for termination of the 85 new licences issued in 2008. The companies have given their replies which are under examination," DoT said in its reply to PAC's questionnaire. Source
