India to have 400 million 3G connection by 2015: Study Top
The number of third generation (3G) subscribers in India will reach 400 million by 2015 as the telecom operators ramp-up rollout of the high-end mobile telephony service, said a Wireless Intelligence study. 'India's 3G connections are set to grow three-fold between 2011 and 2015 as operators ramp-up rollout of new 3G networks,' said the study titled 'India 3G rollout'. According to the report, the telecom operators are likely to invest $2.5 billion in building the new networks and rolling out 3G services in 2011. Source
 
Mobile prices to fall below $100 by 2015: Study Top
Increased competition among manufacturers and their focus on lower-middle income countries will lead to a decline in prices of approximately 70 per cent (4.8 billion) of active mobile phones across the globe below $100 by 2015, according to a recent. "With the increasing number of subscribers coming from 'lower-middle income (LMI)' developing economies, the average size of the consumer wallet is expected to shrink. Source
 
Ascend, India Telecom to merge tower business Top
Ascend Telecom Infrastructure (Ascend) and India Telecom Infra (ITIL) have agreed to merge their telecom tower businesses. Ascend is currently owned by New Silk Route which made its initial investment in the company in July 2007. New Silk Route is a leading Asia-focussed private equity and growth capital firm with $1.4 billion under management. Source
 
Reliance Communications Signs Final Papers For $1.93 Billion Loan Top
Reliance Communications Ltd. said Wednesday it has signed final papers for a loan of $1.93 billion from Chinese banks and financial institutions. The loan will be used to refinance debt taken previously to pay bandwidth fees and to buy equipment, India's second-largest mobile phone operator by users said in a statement. The loan matures in 10 years and will help save interest costs, it said. Source
 
Wireless broadband is the next big thing Top
Bharti Enterprises chairman Sunil Mittal said that "mobile broadband" based on 3G technology was the next big thing for his company. This technology provides high-speed wireless Internet and data network access over a wide area. India revives BSNL, MTNL merger plan Top
Telecoms department calls for state-owned companies to combine their strengths. India's Department of Telecommunications has revived a proposal for the merger of state-run telecom companies Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd., the Business Standard newspaper reported Wednesday, citing a note from the department. In its draft strategic plan the department, while showing concern over the deteriorating performance of BSNL and MTNL, said the companies should be merged as they have complimentary operations and can combine their strengths, the newspaper said. Bharti Airtel gets maximum customer complaints Top
Telecom giant Bharti Airtel is on top when it comes to receiving customer complaints regarding billing and service related issues with 3,571 complaints filed in the last three years, the Lok Sabha was informed. "TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) has been receiving complaints against telecom service providers, alleging various problems which include billing, metering and tariff related issues and activation of chargeable value added services without explicit consent of the customer," Minister of State for Communications Sachin Pilot said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha. India to Get $6.5 Billion from Telecom Services Next Year Top
India is likely to get about 296.48 billion rupees ($6.55 billion) in revenue from telecommunications services next financial year, which starts on April 1. The figure includes license fees from telecom operators, spectrum usage charges and receipts through the auction of bandwidth for wireless broadband services, according to the budget, which was tabled in parliament. Indian telecom operators share part of their revenue as license fees and spectrum usage charges with the Department of Telecommunications. The department also collects a one-time fee from new telecom companies. Source
 
Telecom companies survival boils down to VAS & means Top
By 2015, prepaid subscribers will make up 98% of Indian mobile phone users, making it harder for mobile operators, especially new players, to survive only on revenue from voice calls. According to research group Ovum, from about 750 million now, the number of Indian mobile subscribers will grow to 1.3 billion by 2015 and nearly 98% of them would be prepaid customers — up from about 90% now.
