DoT: thanks to competition, tele-density has gone up | Top |
In its response to a Public Interest Litigation petition in the Supreme Court, the Department of Telecommunications pointed on Thursday to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's recommendation that the entry fee for the subsequent operator be kept the same as what the fourth operator had paid in 2001. The aim was to maintain a level playing field. "As a result of allowing free competition and a level playing field, tele-density increased to a huge extent. Call charges came down drastically, and India today has perhaps the lowest call charges in the… whole world. Government revenue also increased because of the revenue-sharing regime," the DoT said its affidavit. Source
Indian 3G Mobile Subscribers to Rise 80% by 2013 | Top |
Indian mobile market has undergone a revolutionary change during the past few years to become one of the leading mobile markets on the global map. Wireless teledensity has also risen, but still there is a vast scope for further improvement because of a wide gap in teledensity between urban and rural areas. The deployment of 3G services at national level will play a vital role in bridging this huge gap. According to a new research report "Indian 3G Mobile Forecast to 2012", the number of 3G mobile subscribers is expected to grow at a CAGR of around 80% during 2011 – 2013. The growth in the number of 3G mobile subscribers will largely depend on the strategies adopted by successful 3G operators to attract mobile subscribers characterized as price-sensitive. As handsets is becoming an integral part of the consumer experience, the availability of a large number of feature-rich handsets at affordable prices or in attractive bundled offers is likely to further drive the adoption of 3G value-added services. 3G is emerging as an accepted technology platform across geographies as it can deliver high speed data and voice on a single network. The research identifies that 3G, if used as a data card/modem, will give impetus to the broadband penetration in the country. One of the reasons for low growth in the Indian broadband market is the challenge of providing high bandwidth connectivity using landlines, especially in remote areas.
Bharti Airtel Q2 net drops 27%, lags forecast | Top |
Bharti Airtel, India's top mobile operator, reported a bigger-than-expected 27% drop in quarterly profit after being squeezed by a price war but said it continued to generate healthy free cashflow. The outlook for Bharti, India's top mobile operator, and its rivals has improved as phone call prices have stabilised after last year's vicious war in the 15-player Indian telecom market sent call prices as low as 0.4 cents a minute, hitting earnings. No plan to withdraw 2G spectrum: DoT | Top |
Department of telecom (DoT) secretary and telecom commission chairman R Chandrasekhar said that there was no plan to withdraw 2G spectrum allotted in 2008 from any of the players. India's chief auditor, CAG has said that many of the licences given to five of the nine telecom companies were illegal, reports Gulveen Aulakh. Swan (now Etisalat), Datacom (Videocon), Unitech (which ceded majority control to Norways Telenor), Sistema-Shyam and Essar Group-owned Loop Telecom were given pan-India licences and airwaves for a mere `1,651 crore each. India Telecom Ministry Denies Corruption Charges in 2G Auction | Top |
India's government filed a reply before the Supreme Court refuting corruption charges in the government's sale of airwaves in 2008 to mobile-phone operators. India's Central Bureau of Investigation has been examining the role of the federal government, Telecommunications Minister Andimuthu Raja and the Ministry of Communications in the pricing of second-generation airwaves since October last year, the communications ministry said. Indian telecom industry sees a saturation point ahead? | Top |
India's inspiration machine and former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam had shared his vision of Indian tele-density reaching over 75 percent well before the year 2020. Keeping alive his expectations, the urban tele-density has reached the 100 percent landmark and the rural tele-density is slowly shooting up. The overall tele-density has increased to 58.17 percent in July 2010. Indian telecom industry is in a rapid expansion phase with more operators and subscribers adding up in a fast and steady rhythm. Given the fact that most of the providers offer free connections, the subscriber base is shooting up each day. Source
