Metaswitch acquires Colibria | Top |
Metaswitch Networks, a supplier of next generation infrastructure and applications to network operators, today announced the acquisition of Colibria, an independent provider of enhanced instant messaging, presence and network address book solutions. Colibria's all-IP, standards-based portfolio is being deployed by operators worldwide to deliver messaging and content sharing capabilities. "Operators around the world have quickly come to realize that it is time to turn up the heat on their over-the-top competitors," said Kevin DeNuccio, CEO at Metaswitch Networks. "The way people communicate is quickly evolving from just voice and text to a new, richer set of social interaction and contextual calling services. Metaswitch is in the middle of this transformation, helping service providers address these demands and putting their brand front and center in the new communications experience. Colibria technology will play a key role in making this happen." The Colibria acquisition is said to further complement Metaswitch's recently launched Thrutu service, an in-call content sharing experience that enables mobile users to impulsively exchange information during a call. Available as a branded platform for global operators, Thrutu allows operators to introduce these new services today. The addition of Colibria's IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) and Rich Communication Suite (RCS and RCS-e) compliant portfolio further broadens the range of options that Metaswitch can now present to operators looking for short, mid and long-term answers to the dual challenges of countering competitive threats and keeping the voice call relevant. "We see RCS as a strategic move by service providers that resonates well with customers. A move that could attract nearly 44 million subscribers by 2015," said Diane Myers, directing analyst, VoIP & IMS for Infonetics Research. "We've tracked both Metaswitch and Colibria for a while and see the combination as a potent force in SIP-oriented converged applications for wireline and wireless operators." "We are thrilled that Colibria has been acquired by Metaswitch," said Lars Myhrum, Colibria CEO. "The companies share a common culture of engineering excellence and customer-first thinking. Colibria has been in the forefront of messaging and rich communication services, exemplifying Norwegian companies' ability to innovate and succeed alongside major international companies. Metaswitch will now allow us to write the next chapter in that story." Metaswitch says it will continue to invest in and support Colibria's brand, products and strategic industry partnerships. Myhrum will assume the General Manager role for Metaswitch's presence in Norway, with responsibility for the ongoing development and evolution of the Colibria product line. Spirent Enables Wireless Operators and Mobile Device Vendors to Successfully Launch Location-based Services (LBS) on LTE Devices | Top |
LTE networks make possible a new breed of location-based services (LBS) that need to determine a user's location quickly and accurately, at any time and in any place. To help accelerate the availability and verify the performance of these location services on LTE devices, leading mobile operators, technology developers and device manufacturers are using a pioneering lab-based LBS LTE test solution from Spirent Communications. To satisfy growing consumer demand, the mobile industry is relying heavily on advances in location technology to enable a new wave of creative LBS applications. Spirent continues to develop innovative test solutions that help bring new location technologies to market faster and with better performance. Spirent's new LBS test solution for LTE devices is built on top of the company's market-leading Position Location Test System (PLTS) and UMTS Location Technology Solution (ULTS). Spirent solutions are already used by all the leading industry players to test location technologies such as Assisted GPS (A-GPS) and A-GLONASS in CDMA and WCDMA devices. A critical enabler of LBS on LTE networks is a new protocol from the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) called Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) version 2.0. SUPL 2.0 enables A-GPS and other location technologies to be employed across LTE, CDMA and WCDMA networks. It also supports the use of hybrid location technology combinations. The first test offerings from Spirent include SUPL 2.0 protocol conformance for LTE/CDMA and LTE/WCDMA dual-mode devices. Another test area supported by Spirent is standalone GPS performance while LTE data transfers are in process. "No legacy protocol could do what SUPL 2.0 can, so major network operators have decided to make it a requirement to enable LBS across all the cellular technologies supported by an LTE device," said Rob VanBrunt, vice president of Spirent's Wireless business. "In some cases it will also be used for E911. Spirent has made major contributions to development of the OMA's protocol conformance tests, helping to make SUPL 2.0 a reality." In addition to its technical advantages, SUPL 2.0 enables new revenue opportunities for the industry, with features such as Area Event triggering. This new capability allows applications to automatically alert users when they enter or leave a pre-defined boundary such as a shopper receiving updates on the best deals from a store upon entering a shopping mall. Mobile coupon providers and creative advertising agencies are eagerly awaiting this type of capability which is expected to trigger a wave of new innovation in the LBS application marketplace. Ethernet in the Cloud – Unifying Force or Lowest Common Denominator? | Top |
The key role of Ethernet in enabling Cloud services became a hot topic on the first day of this year's NetEvents APAC VIP Service Provider Summit as Informa's Principal Analyst, Camille Mendler, challenged carriers to see beyond the "dumb cloud" model and think in terms of end-to-end service delivery – capitalizing on their overall infrastructure and not just delivering from a datacenter. During the 2-day Summit's opening conference, special guest speaker Nan Chen, President, MEF, made a strong case for Ethernet as the key enabler for the widespread uptake of Cloud services in his presentation The Cloud – Smokescreen or Solution?. Preparing for the Future – IT's all in the Clouds is the Summit's overall theme, of special interest to an audience of senior figures from leading APAC Service Providers. Nan Chen began his presentation by playing devil's advocate, pointing out that business models such as the network computer, thin client and Software as a Service had been heavily hyped then crashed in the past – so what's new? The answer he gave was: "ubiquitous Ethernet". For the first time there is a potential common fabric running from LAN through access through metro to WAN. (NetEvents APAC Press Summit) | |
TATA detects sweet spot in Cloud services to SMEs at NetEvents APAC Summit | Top |
Tata's commitment to the future of Cloud computing was underlined at NetEvents APAC Summit. In his keynote address Enterprises Must Re-Engineer for a Cloud-based World, or Die by Amit Sinha Roy, Vice President, Marketing & Strategy, Global Enterprise Solutions, Tata Communications, explained why enough small and medium-sized businesses in Asia would take up the company's cloud offerings to justify the company's investment in Hyderabad and Singapore-based datacenters. "Yes I have made a big bet in terms of our investment in infrastructure to deliver cloud" said Roy. "The growth is in smaller enterprises as they do need serious server computing for burst mode requirements, as much as large enterprises with their own datacenters." Addressing SMEs was expensive, he admitted, but worthwhile in the India market. Interviewing him before an audience of press, analysts, industry professionals plus senior execs from the APAC Service Provider community, Informa Principal Analyst Camille Mendler asked if this strategy would work outside India. Roy replied: "There will be a different customer base in every region – it's media and entertainment in some." "But telecom is a mass production model of digital goods – what you're doing is at odds with that," said Mendler. "Yes, but we have divisions to address different segments," said Roy. Tata Communications bets cloud strategy on SMEs | Top |
Amit Sinha Roy, VP of marketing strategy at Tata Communications, told journalists and analysts at NetEvents' Asia Pacific conference in Langkawi, Malaysia, that the conglomerate giant was betting that enough small and medium-sized businesses in Asia would take up the company's cloud offerings to make Tata's investment in new datacentres profitable. He was speaking to an audience of press, analysts and industry vendors. "Yes I have made a big bet in terms of our investment in infrastructure to deliver cloud. The growth is in smaller enterprises as they do need serious server computing for burst mode requirements, as much as large enterprises with their own datacentres. SMEs want to reduce capex," he said. Tata has just launched two datacentres, one in Hyderabad and one in Singapore. Interviewed on stage by Informa analyst Camille Mendler, he said the company built two, not too far from each other to bring lower latency, to bring data inc-country,, and to help provide local support. "We have a public cloud strategy for large enterprises but there is a sweet spot in terms of services for SMEs," he said. "Singapore supports surrounding countries, including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand and so on — and they can pay in any currency," he said. Roy said that addressing SMEs was expensive but worthwhile. "The typical company is one with enough IT maturity to provision a server is our likely target audience," he said. "Mid-sized companies might not have an IT department, and we can offer support and help." In the Indian market, there are a lot of companies that do development work for other companies, there's a lot of those,"he said. "IT development is their business." "But will that work outside India?" asked Mendler. "There will be a different customer base in every region – it's media and entertainment in some," said Roy. "But telecom is a mass production model of digital goods but what you're doing is at odds with that," said Mendler. "Yes, but we have divisions to address different segments," said Roy. Roy said that customers would experience no switching costs or penalties, so it would easy for customers to get out of Tata's service. "Loyalty is earned by giving high quality service at an affordable cost – not being the cheapest with the latest technology in terms of performance reach and uptime – so it's down to customer experience and service level," he said. Tata will also offer white label services at wholesale prices for third parties to resell, Roy said. "Will it be profitable? We think so," he said.
