India's Airtel Introduces Cash Payment by Mobile Phone Top
India's largest mobile operator, Bharti Airtel, is offering its customers the facility to make payments through mobile phones, reflecting a growing interest by Indian mobile operators in addressing the large number of mobile users in the country that do not have access to banking and online facilities. Currently a large number of people in India pay in cash for goods and services, sometimes standing in long queues to pay for utilities like electricity and water supply. Source
 
India to Charge Carriers for Bandwidth Top
India will charge mobile telephone operators a market-determined fee for the bandwidth they hold beyond the limit as mentioned in their licenses, as part of a new telecom policy, the federal telecommunications minister said Saturday. Licenses to offer telecom services will now be given without the bandwidth, and companies will be allowed to offer any kind of telecommunication services under a single license, the minister, Kapil Sibal, told reporters, outlining the broad contours of the forthcoming telecom policy. India to make 2G mobile spectrum price market-linked Top
India will de-link second-generation radio (2G) spectrum that now comes free with telecoms licences and ask companies to pay for spectrum based on a market-driven mechanism, the telecoms minister said, unveiling the broad contours of a new telecoms policy. Kapil Sibal also told reporters bigger telecoms carriers such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone's India unit will be asked to pay market-linked prices for 2G radio-spectrum beyond 6.2 mega hertz. Mobile data traffic to rise 26 times by 2015, India's to grow fastest Top
The increased use of video on mobile devices and the ever growing numbers of tablets and smartphones will be the driving factors in mobile data traffic growth in the coming years. Cisco, the computer networking giant, has revealed in its forecast that mobile data traffic is set to grow 26-fold from 2010 through 2015. On an annual basis, the growth in mobile data will be about 92 percent. Cisco projects that by the year 2015, there will be over 5.6 billion devices for personal use and about 1.5 billion machine-to-machine devices. Source
 
New telecom policy will help in consolidation: Sibal Top
Attempting to move beyond the country's tainted 2G history, telecom minister Kapil Sibal's new telecom policy would promote consolidation in the telecom sector and bring about effective utilisation of spectrum in a clear, transparent and a balanced manner so that government earns revenue, users get best services at reasonable rates and the industry posts healthy growth. Speaking at the Idea Exchange programme of the Express Group, Sibal said he would also come out with norms on mergers and acquisitions. "The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is assessing whether the country needs 13-14 operators per circle. Source
 
India's Spectrum-Allotment Process was "Wrong" Top
A retired judge examining the allocation of telecom licenses and bandwidth by India's Department of Telecommunications from 2001 to 2009 has said all procedures adopted since 2003 were "wrong," including the first-come-first basis for allotment, the federal communications minister said. Communications Minister Kapil Sibal, while briefing reporters about a report submitted by former Supreme Court judge Shivaraj V. Patil, also said the procedures adopted from 2003 were against the decisions and opinion of federal cabinet and the telecom regulator taken in October 2003. Source
 
Bharti Airtel net slips 41% on rebranding cost, forex loss Top
Bharti Airtel today reported a 41 per cent drop in its net profit for the third quarter ending December 31. The company's profit dipped to Rs. 1,303.3 crore against Rs. 2,194.5 crore in the year-ago period. Bharti is the country's biggest mobile company. The company said the decline in profit was on account of the one-time cost of Rs. 340 crore it had to incur for brand re-launching. In addition, adverse foreign currency fluctuation in Africa and India resulted in an exchange loss of Rs. 151 crore, which also added to the erosion in bottom line. Source
