RCom raises $255 mn to partly refinance 3G spectrum fee | Top |
Telecom service provider Reliance Communications (RCom) has raised $255 million (about Rs 1,155 crore) through external commercial borrowing (ECB) from consortium of banks to partly refinance the amount paid for 3G spectrum in the auction last year. The loan is funded by a consortium of banks led by Australian and New Zealand Banking Group, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank, DBS Bank Ltd and Intesa Sanpaolo Spa, RCom said. Even as the operators are yet to start offering 3-G mobile services the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will make it public its consultation paper on 4G spectrum to facilitate its introduction by 2012. The fourth generation or 4G technology offers download at faster speed known as ultra-broadband and high definition video on demand among other such services. Source | |

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has launched nationwide mobile number portability (MNP), a move that will allow users to switch operators without losing their phone numbers. Addressing a press conference after the launch, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said, "It is a historic moment, we have demonstrated the customer is king. The whole process will not take more than seven days and cost Rs. 19 only which is likely to be reduced further." Source | |

India set the stage for a new wave of competition in its booming telecom industry Thursday as it allowed its 750 million mobile users to change operators without losing their existing cellphone numbers. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh launched the mobile number portability (MNP) service, a facility that he said would cost a subscriber as less as Rs. 19 or 41 cents. Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology Kapil Sibal emphasized the urgent need for finalization of broadband plan including strategy for roll out of optical fibre. Sibal said: "The national broadband plan including the Optical Fibre Network, as a national resource would be equitably available to all the concerned stakeholders for providing broadband services in non-discriminatory manner." Sibal further said the ultimate objective is to ensure inclusive growth through broadband for using various applications related to education, medical treatment, and entertainment and also an attempt to take it to every household.
