GSM user base grows 17.45 million in Nov | Top |
Indian GSM telecom operators added a whopping 17.45 million new subscribers in November, taking the all-India GSM cellular subscriber base to 526.18 million, cellular operators' association COAI said on Thursday. The GSM subscriber base stood at 508.72 million at the end of October, 2010. Bharti Airtel, the largest GSM player, added 3.10 million new users in November, taking its total subscriber base to 149.39 million, data released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) showed. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Wednesday recommended setting up a 'National Broadband Network' at a cost of about Rs.60,000 crore to achieve 16-crore broadband connections by 2014. Issuing its recommendations on 'National Broadband Plan', TRAI said the project would be financed by universal service obligation (USO) fund and the loan given by the government. Source | |

Google India is focusing on new technologies to target the rising mobile Internet traffic in the country. "Mobile queries will take over desktop queries by 2012 in the country," Vinay Goel, head of products at Google India, said. Telecom BTS to face penalty for non-certification: Pilot | Top |
Telecom and infrastructure companies whose base transceiver stations (BTS) do not have environmental clearance by Nov 15 will face a penalty of Rs.5 lakhs once the government begins random testing of emission levels across the country, Minister of State for Communications Sachin Pilot said. 'Telecom companies and infrastructure companies, which own passive telecom infrastructure, have an obligation in meeting the statutory requirement after being partners with the government in accepting and adopting the norms prescribed,' said Pilot. China's Huawei to invest $2 bn on Indian telecom | Top |
On the eve of Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's visit to India, Shanghai-based telecom equipment manufacturer Huawei Tuesday announced an investment of $2 billion in a new research facility in Bangalore and its manufacturing unit in Chennai. The investment, which will be made over the next five years, will also focus on augmenting the Chinese firm's capabilities in local sourcing, increasing headcount, while scaling up potential of its research and development (R&D) and manufacturing units, Huawei said in a statement. Sistema Shyam Telecom plans a public offer in the second half of 2011 after the completion of its 20% stake sale to the government of Russia for close to $600 million early next year. Ongoing inquiries into spectrum allocation will not affect the company's India plans and it will reply to letter from the Indian government on not meeting rollout deadlines, chief executive Vsevolod Rozanov said . Last week, the telecom ministry had sent notices to 85 licencees named by the government auditor, asking to reply within 15 days on why the permits, given in 2008, should not be cancelled. However, Rozanov said the letter received by the company was related to paying "liquidated damages" and not licence cancellation. Source | |
